While Sunbathers Fled Attack, Popular Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many local residents, noticed loud noises echoing across the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Chaos

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of courage in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for numerous the injured.
