Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
