The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
