The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl containing several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
