The Finnish Team Shocks Back-to-Back Defending Champions US in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.
Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at two minutes and eleven seconds of extra time as Finland engineered a remarkable four to three win over the two-time defending champion United States on Friday evening in the world junior hockey last eight.
"We must give credit to the US," stated Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju. "They are a hell of a team, loaded with great individuals and a well coached team. But I said we wanted that payback from last year, and I believe we truly deserved it tonight."
In the semifinal matches Sunday, the Finns will face the Swedish team, while the Canadians will meet Czechia. Sweden beat the Latvian side 6-3, Canada had a first-period five-goal outburst in a seven to one rout over the Slovakian team, and Czechia overcame Switzerland by a 6-2 margin.

Michigan State’s Lee Ryker knotted the score for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds left in regulation and the Notre Dame netminder N. Kempf pulled for an additional skater.
Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen scored in a fifty-five-second burst in the third to give their team a two to one lead. He tied it at two-all with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then assisted on Saarelainen’s go-ahead goal with 6:22 on the clock. Saarelainen also earned a helper on the first goal.

The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and an assist for the United States after being struck in the head versus Switzerland and missing the next two contests.
"I thought we executed well for most of the game," Hutson said. "But the little bounces that they got, a lot of their Grade-A chances came from our errors."
His university colleague Cole Eiserman gave the United States a two to one lead on a power play with 9:45 remaining in the middle frame. He took a feed from his teammate and beat the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.
Hutson scored on a fast break thirty-five seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen tied it at 4:46 on a quick shot from the left wing.

Germany won the consolation match, beating the Danes 8-4. Manuel Schams had two goals to ensure his nation retain its spot for the following season in the main event. The Danish side was relegated to the second tier.
