The English Team to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the anticipated qualification for a tournament taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to host the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, should they win Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The tournament was launched at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were confronted as they arrived the site by about 50 activists, who urged Israel’s national side to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Timeline
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help connect with a broader range of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through the standard process.
Locations and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was removed as a host city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a competition for the fans and a celebration of everything we love about the game – its passion and ability to unite individuals.”
Over 3 million tickets, a unprecedented number for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be released to attendees.
