Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release

However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.

“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.

Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the files' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained little new data.
