Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump embraced a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the conflict on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded reports that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
