In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
