King to Broadcast Personal Address on Illness in Television Programme
His Majesty has taped a first-hand account about his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's annual cancer awareness campaign, run by medical research organisations and Channel 4.
Official sources confirmed the King would discuss his "healing process" as a individual battling cancer, in a televised statement on Friday evening at 20:00 GMT.
The address, recorded at a royal residence a fortnight ago, will highlight the critical nature of routine screenings to help guarantee more people detect the disease at an early stage.
This will be a rare update on the wellbeing of the King, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in February 2024. But it is thought improbable the King will disclose his specific form of cancer.
The Campaign's Core Mission
The Stand Up To Cancer initiative each year collects money for clinical trials and therapies and prompts people to get check-ups to improve the probability of an early diagnosis.
The King's candid approach about his health challenge, and his experience as a patient, has been designed to increase understanding and to persuade more people to get screened - and this will be escalated with this exceptional personal contribution.
Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to keep working, preserving a hectic timetable despite his ongoing course of therapy, and he is understood not to have wanted to be characterised by his diagnosis.
The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and hosting the biggest number of inward state visits to the UK for a generation, featuring the German president recently.
Friday's Evening Programme
Friday evening's Stand Up to Cancer show on television, presented by celebrities such as a team of famous hosts, will encourage people not to be frightened of getting preventative tests.
The hosts have been had experience with cancer - Davina McCall said in November she had undergone surgery for a tumour, while Clare Balding was overcame thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously discussed his parent, who had a diagnosis and then later leukaemia.
The broadcast will target the estimated nine million people in the UK who health organisations estimate are not current with public health checks, with an website to let people determine if they are able for examinations for key health indicators.
In an effort to demystify screenings and illustrate the importance of early diagnosis there will be a direct feed from cancer clinics at medical facilities in Cambridge.
"I want to remove the anxiety surrounding cancer screening and demonstrate all people that they are not alone in this," said Davina McCall.
Available National Services
Right now in the UK, there are three NHS cancer screening programmes - for specific cancers - offered to certain age groups.
A emerging preventative initiative is also being phased in for people at high risk of contracting the illness, primarily aimed at people of a certain age, who currently smoke or were former smokers.
Men may discuss prostate screenings, but there is lacking a standardised service currently available.
Charitable Impact
The fundraising project, which has raised £113m since 2012, is supporting multiple research studies involving many patients.
King Charles, in a address for guests at a reception for support groups in the spring, had spoken of understanding the "overwhelming and at times alarming situation" for those diagnosed and their families.
But he said his first-hand encounter of living with cancer had shown him that "periods of great challenge of sickness can be brightened by the kindness of others," as he praised those who cared for those receiving treatment.
Official sources has not revealed what kind of cancer the King has, or what treatment he has undergone. The King's cancer was detected after he had received a prostate procedure.
