Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He battled justice and justice won.
A couple of months subsequent to being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems jail-bound.
Imminent Jailing
The adjudicated plotter – who had been living under home confinement in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid increasing speculation that he will be sent to a notorious top-security penitentiary.
Historical Remarks on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s long public life, the right-wing former soldier exhibited scant mercy for the country's prison population.
“For what reason must we give those scoundrels a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Jail Location Debate
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an seeming bid to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.
The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the elderly leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute gut ailments – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding forty inmates: “It's almost one square meter per detainee.
“We conversed to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the horrible food,” continued the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out ahead of the former president’s predicted detention.
Authoring in a prominent daily, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its history”.
“This is an wrong that gnaws the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.
Varied Popular Reaction
That may be accurate considering the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of many other people who feel he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and also plotting to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting administration's political party, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to receive respectful handling – but dignified care in prison. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has always claimed that basic rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a prison to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.
“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, demeaning treatment”.
Possible Jail Environment
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about fourteen thousand detainees, his probable location seems to be a close jail for officers and other “special” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the spectacular official residence, approximately 20 kilometers away.
Based on reports, the room Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 square meter WC with a water facility and a 130 square foot balcony. “He could be permitted to have a TV and also a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” information suggested.
Ideological Comments
Senator Lucas denounced the rumoured idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
