Ghostface Original Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.

Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
