Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
