Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in military or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this founding document," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Reply
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified announcement condemning the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical social media posts and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Officials' Firm Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who value this nation and swore an oath to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the legislature instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to arrange a video message to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
