California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is experiencing water scarcity. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Shows No Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from a period of significant storms that helped fill water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

Yet, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions should not be confused with being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. State experts stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation during the coming seasons.
