Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Superhero

For years, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. While he is called Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film based on a popular book sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per an expert who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Stories about his “recruitment work” in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it might seek to examine.
