A Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

To celebrate the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with special items. Enthusiasts will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's theme. The big draw, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. This shop will operate both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful illustrations depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially is what a Pokémon Professor could produce once adventurers submit their data, alternatively a naturalist's journal might have created had the Galapagos teemed with flying-types instead of finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious approach, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

The company regularly to issue special edition cards for big events and brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards often feature the famous mouse Pokémon who serves as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this new museum card is its distinctly bigger dimensions. While exact measurements have not been immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be highly restricted, with fans limited to just one card with each transaction.

Limiting Reseller Activity

Per an official announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the institution itself. But, broader availability is slated for specific stores in the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to purchase the card via the official web shop. While reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. For those feeling left out, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the Museum shop and from its web shop, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the efforts of hundreds of researchers who are scientific inquiry to discover solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement notes.
